To offer hi-tech diagnostics, comprehensive treatment plans, and compassionate care to every patient we see.
About Us
For over a decade, Shaughnessy Optometry has been bringing you comprehensive eye care… and people have taken notice. When we first opened, all of our practice’s eye care was overseen by Dr Meg Sexsmith. Since then, our patient base has doubled in size, necessitating the addition of Dr. Pravjit Atwal.
We’re incredibly proud of the growth we’ve undergone and we can’t wait to see what the next 10 years hold for us. However, no matter how much we’ve changed in the past or how much we’ll change in the future, we can promise one thing: we will never lose sight of our patients’ needs and experiences.
Dr. Sexsmith received her Bachelor of Science with Honours and her Doctor of Optometry from the University of Waterloo.
Before creating Shaughnessy Optometry in 2006, Dr. Sexsmith worked at West 10th Eyes for 8 years and Broadway Eyecare for 4 years.
In 2009, she qualified for Ocular Therapeutics and finished the advanced course of Oral Therapeutics in 2017. This gives her the designation of a dry eye specialist.
She feels very blessed to have a job she enjoys every day. The opportunity to solve problems for her patients makes every day a good one and proves that optometry really is the perfect fit for Dr. Sexsmith.
Optometrist
Pravjit Atwal
Dr. Pravjit Atwal loves living and working in the lower mainland, where she grew up. Upon graduating with a BScN degree from the University of British Columbia in 2005, she worked within various facets of nursing to eventually find her calling in acute care palliative.
She looks back at her time nursing with great fondness as it taught her so much about life, people, and caring. Even then, she knew she wanted to pursue further studies in healthcare and carry forward the passion bestowed her by nursing; so, when she underwent laser refractive surgery for her own high myopia in 2007, she found herself inspired by the very optometrist who had provided care for her eyes since early childhood. She decided to pursue optometry at the University of Waterloo, graduating in 2012. Since then, she has enjoyed practicing in various settings, sometimes alongside ophthalmologists, striving to provide excellence in oculo-visual healthcare adjusting care to each client’s specific needs.
In her spare time, Dr. Atwal enjoys biking/jogging the Vancouver seawall, spending silly times with her family/friends, travelling (often to Japan), and doing a bit of photography with her husband.
She welcomes patients of all ages with a smile.
